Coast Guard saves crab boat after rogue wave crashes through windshield (video)

DEPOE BAY, Ore. — Coast Guard rescue crews braved 30-foot waves to save a disabled crabbing boat aiming for the rocks Thursday near Depoe Bay.

The rescue took nearly 12 hours.

Crews from Station Depoe Bay safeguarded the vessel and rode out the storm until the weather cleared and they could safely tow the boat across the Yaquina Bay Bar.

The fishing boat reportedly lost power after a rogue wave smashed through its windshield.

“Other than a little fatigue, everybody is doing well,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Matthew Sprague, a surfman at Station Depoe Bay and coxswain of the first Motor Lifeboat on scene. “We pushed our crews and our boats to the limits in the storm, but we are committed to getting the Ms. Nicani to safe harbor.”

The three-person crew is now safely back on shore.
