Pontoon boat collision leaves six injured and two dead

(WIAT) Birmingham, AL — Around 9:55 p.m. Monday evening, a pontoon boat with eight adults aboard collided with a barge on Wilson Lake near the Wilson Dam.

All eight occupants of the pontoon boat went overboard into the water.  Six were rescued by the barge crew and transported to ECM Hospital in Florence where they were admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

The remaining two occupants were reported missing.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, the body of Catherine Ekholm, 79, was recovered from the water by search crews.

At approximately 9 a.m.on Tuesday morning, the body of Sid Elliot, 62, was located and recovered from the waters of Wilson Lake near where the collision occurred.

Although the search efforts are completed, the investigation is ongoing.
