No Injuries Reported After 50ft Sailboat Catches Fire, Capsizes In Lake Erie

It was around quarter to 8 Thursday night when the Norfolk County OPP Marine Unit noticed a large plume of smoke east of the Long Point Lighthouse.

After attending the scene, investigators learned that the operator of a 50 ft. sailboat had noticed smoke coming from inside the vessel. The 50 year old man from Erie, Pennsylvania tried but was unable to put out the fire; he then safely escaped by making his way to a 10 ft. Zodiac attached to the vessel.

“No injuries were reported as a result of this incident and police would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that assisted with this occurrence,” says Norfolk OPP Cst. Ed Sanchuk.

“We would also like to remind all boating enthusiasts to always wear their life jackets and to prepare for that day out on the water.”

Another passing boat noticed the man and provided help while the American Coast Guard was able to bring the man back to his home.

The boat sunk in roughly 210 ft. of water.
